If you’re an avid reader, your dream vacation may have a literary twist. Does Mr. Darcy make your heart go pitter-patter? Are you a fan of Shakespeare? If visiting places that your favorite authors have brought to life on the page is what tickles your fancy, consider visiting one of these iconic locations featured in the world’s most famous works of literature.
Verona
Verona hosted the epic love story of Romeo and Juliet, the stars of one of Shakespeare’s finest plays. While you won’t see Montagues and Capulets feuding in 16th century garb, you will find a city rich with history and culture. Verona was named a UNESCO World Heritage site for all of the Romanesque architecture that has been preserved there. For example, the Arena, a famous Roman amphitheater, stands in Piazza Bra. This historic space is now used for public events, fairs, theatre and open-air opera.

Derbyshire
Home to Mr. Darcy in Jane Austen’s Pride and Prejudice, this English countryside location has had human settlement since the Paleolithic era. The beautiful landscape draws more than just Jane Austen lovers; much of Peak District National Park is in Derbyshire. Don’t be fooled by the name, however. Peak District National Park is mostly made up of rounded hills and grit stone escarpments. However, even without peaks, the area is lovely. Other attractions include Chatsworth house, which was used to represent Mr. Darcy’s home in the 2005 film adaptation of Pride and Prejudice; Bolsover Castle, built in the 12th century; and Haddon Hall, which served as Prince Humperdinck’s castle in The Princess Bride.

Montecristo
In The Count of Monte Cristo, Edmond Dantès ends up on the islet of Montecristo off the coast of Italy where he exacts his revenge. This islet is actually the tip of a volcano and is kept secluded as a nature preserve park. The ruins of the San Mamiliano monastery can still be seen there. If you’re looking for the iconic estate shown in the 2002 film adaptation of The Count of Monte Cristo, you’ll have to head to the Powerscourt estate in County Wicklow, Ireland.
